Civic Watch | North Port’s Oct. 6 Meeting |
North Port’s City Commission is scheduled to meet Tuesday morning in City Hall. The commission—not a separate advisory board—will take up the items in the posted agenda, including a proposed transportation impact-fee ordinance now in the city’s legislative record. When and where: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, in City Commission Chambers, 4970 City Hall Blvd., North Port. Why it matters: impact-fee decisions can shape how growth-related transportation needs are funded. How to participate: read the current agenda first, attend in person if you wish to speak, or use the city’s meeting page for the livestream and participation details. For a meeting question, call the City Commission office at 941-429-7000. Open North Port’s official agenda • Meeting, livestream and participation details • Read the full Civic Watch story |
October Focus | A Local Breast-Health Starting Point |

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but the practical question is what to do next. The Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program can arrange screening and needed diagnostic exams for eligible uninsured women across Southwest Florida. Who and what: eligible women ages 50–64 with household income at or below 200% of the federal poverty level and no insurance covering these services. Where: the program serves Sarasota and Charlotte counties, along with neighboring counties in the regional service area. How: call 941-861-2676 to ask about eligibility or to apply; the program says it will arrange qualifying appointments for a year. Why now: new breast pain, a lump, nipple discharge or other change merits a prompt call. Open the official BCCEDP eligibility and application page • Read the full breast-health guide |
Water Watch | Check Before You Go |
For Lemon Bay, Manasota Key or any Gulf outing, water conditions are a same-day decision—not a once-a-week forecast. Check the weather for wind, lightning and marine conditions, then check the state’s beach-water information separately before swimming. Who provides the information: the National Weather Service and the Florida Department of Health. What to check: the forecast, marine warnings and current beach-water advisories. When: before leaving home and again after a storm or a water-quality advisory. How: use the official forecast and beach-water pages; if an advisory is posted, follow the health department’s guidance rather than relying on conditions you saw earlier. Wild Suncoast | Have You Seen a Gopher Tortoise or Burrow? |
![]() Wild Suncoast illustration |
A gopher tortoise can look unhurried on a sandy shoulder, but its burrow is a busy address for other wildlife. Florida lists the species as threatened, and both the animal and its burrow are protected. What to do: keep your distance, keep pets away and never move a healthy tortoise. Where to report: use the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s sighting form and include a photo and location if you have them. Who to call: for an injured tortoise on weekdays, call 850-921-1030; on evenings or weekends, call 888-404-FWCC (3922). Why: reports help the state understand and protect a species whose burrows shelter many other animals.
