Puppies with a Purpose: Transforming Lives in Palmetto

Dogs Inc., formerly Southeastern Guide Dogs, is deepening its impact in Palmetto, Florida by training transformative service dogs for people with vision loss, veterans with disabilities, and children facing major challenges.

This nonprofit, established in 1982, adopted the new name in May 2024 to reflect its growing mission and services.

Puppy raisers like Lakewood Ranch’s Bob and Ann Kasperski play a crucial role by nurturing and socializing puppies destined for service.

One of their pups, Morgan, is set to assist a visually impaired high school student, demonstrating the life-changing results of volunteer efforts.

Dogs Inc. also holds events like Discovery Day to involve the local community and offer a behind-the-scenes look at the training process.

With demand for skilled dogs rising, the group is calling for more volunteer puppy raisers and support to sustain these vital, free services.

Surge in Shark Activity Along Sarasota's Coast Raises Community Concerns

Sarasota’s scenic coastline is seeing a surge in shark activity, prompting both excitement and caution within the community.

In March 2024, marine researchers tracked a juvenile great white shark named Rose near the West Florida Escarpment, about 200 miles offshore. Weighing over 600 pounds, Rose’s appearance spotlights the presence of apex predators in local waters.

August brought even more attention when angler Mason Carson captured striking footage of a massive 13-foot tiger shark close to Sarasota. These sightings put a spotlight on the area’s remarkable marine biodiversity.

However, safety remains a concern. In July, a 26-year-old Sarasota man sustained minor injuries after a shark bite at New Smyrna Beach. Local captains, including Scott Tesinsky, report more frequent shark encounters during fishing charters, underscoring the need for caution.

Experts from Mote Marine Laboratory urge residents and visitors to heed safety tips—swim in groups, avoid peak shark feeding times, and remain vigilant while enjoying Sarasota’s vibrant coast.
