Dogs Inc. trains service dogs to empower individuals with disabilities. |
Dogs Inc., formerly known as Southeastern Guide Dogs, continues its mission of transforming lives through the training of exceptional service dogs in Palmetto, Florida.
Many locals may remember the stories of CJ, the guide dog, who had a regular column in the Punta Gorda Herald in the early 2000s. CJ went on the become a guide dog and served her friend for many years.
Established in 1982, this nonprofit organization has been dedicated to providing guide and service dogs to individuals with vision loss, veterans with disabilities, and children facing significant challenges.
In May 2024, the organization rebranded to Dogs Inc. to better reflect its expanded mission and services.
One of the key components of their program is the involvement of dedicated puppy raisers who play a crucial role in the early development of these future service dogs.
These volunteers provide a nurturing environment, socialization, and basic training to prepare the puppies for their specialized roles.
For instance, Bob and Ann Kasperski, residents of Lakewood Ranch, have been actively involved in raising puppies for Dogs Inc..
They have raised multiple puppies, including one named Morgan, who is set to become a guide dog for a high school senior with vision loss.
The Kasperskis' commitment highlights the profound impact that puppy raisers have on both the dogs and their future handlers.
To engage the community and showcase their work, Dogs Inc. hosts events like Discovery Day.
On March 29, 2025, the organization opened its Palmetto campus to the public, offering an inside look at the training process and the journey of these puppies as they prepare to become service dogs.
Attendees had the opportunity to meet the puppies, observe training demonstrations, and learn about the various programs offered by Dogs Inc..
The success of Dogs Inc. relies heavily on the support of volunteers and donors.
In June 2024, the organization announced a need for more puppy raisers to meet the growing demand for guide, service, and skilled companion dogs.
Volunteers are provided with comprehensive training and support, ensuring they are well-equipped to raise and socialize the puppies effectively.
For those interested in supporting this mission, opportunities include becoming a puppy raiser, volunteering on campus, or making financial contributions.
Each role is vital in helping Dogs Inc. continue to provide these life-changing services at no cost to the recipients.
For more information on how to get involved or to learn more about their programs, visit their official website.
Through the dedication of volunteers, staff, and the community, Dogs Inc. continues to make a significant impact, one puppy at a time.
